When on any photography expedition, it is important to immerse yourself in the local culture. Doing so can produce amazing photographs.
Local markets are always a buzz of life, culture and color. And depending on the type of market, there is usually a vast array of culinary delights to tickle your taste buds whilst you make your way about. (But be wary of what you buy food wise in rural markets. Poor food handling and poor hygiene can be a real problem and can ruin your enjoyment of the next few days of your expedition experience.)
One thing I really enjoy are local events and performances. Be it observing a horse race, tribal ceremonies or the like, they all provide a true insight into the lifestyle and culture of the local residents.
Whilst in Vanuatu, it was recommended by one of the local guides that there was a fire dancing performance done by a local tribe. Being the last night of our trip, it wasn’t part of our itinerary, but we made an impromptu decision to give it a go anyway.
It wasn’t as authentic to the local culture as I would prefer but considering it was an impromptu decision to go. it was quite entertaining nonetheless.
